The Mediterranean summer hits Cyprus hard — and your pool takes the brunt of it. Between June and September, water temperatures regularly push above 30°C, UV radiation is intense, and the combination of heat, evaporation, and heavy bather loads creates the perfect environment for algae to take hold. If you’ve ever walked out on a Monday morning to find your pool has turned green overnight, you already know how fast things can go wrong. Here’s what’s actually happening to your water during the Cyprus summer — and what you can do to stay ahead of it.
Why Cyprus Summer Conditions Are Harder on Pool Water Than You Think
Most pool care advice online is written with northern European or North American climates in mind. Cyprus is different. From May through October, you’re dealing with:
- Sustained high temperatures — air temps regularly above 35°C, water temps above 28–30°C
- Extreme UV exposure — direct intense sunlight for 10–12 hours a day, which destroys unstabilised chlorine within hours
- Hard water — Cyprus has some of the hardest tap water in Europe due to its limestone geology. High calcium hardness causes scaling on tiles and equipment, and it affects how your sanitiser performs
- Saharan dust — periodic dust storms from North Africa deposit fine particles and organic matter directly into your pool, instantly spiking your chlorine demand
- Heavy bather loads — summer means more swimmers, more sunscreen, more body oils, and more contaminants entering the water daily
Each of these factors compounds the others. High temperatures accelerate chemical reactions and bacteria growth. UV destroys free chlorine. Dust adds organic load. The result: your pool chemistry becomes unstable fast, and algae finds its window.
The Chlorine Problem in Summer
Chlorine is your primary defence against algae and bacteria — but free chlorine breaks down rapidly in direct sunlight. Without a proper stabiliser (cyanuric acid), you can lose most of your free chlorine within a couple of hours of a sunny Cyprus morning. This is why pools treated on a Friday can look fine all weekend and turn green by Tuesday.
Stabiliser (CYA) Levels Matter
Cyanuric acid acts as a sunscreen for your chlorine, slowing its degradation under UV. The ideal CYA range for outdoor pools in Cyprus is typically 30–50 ppm. Too low and your chlorine vanishes. Too high — above 80–100 ppm — and chlorine becomes less effective even when it’s present, a condition sometimes called chlorine lock.
In summer, if you’re constantly adding chlorine but never maintaining levels, your CYA may be too low, or you may have another problem: high water temperature reducing effective chlorine activity.
Free Chlorine Targets Need Adjusting
During peak summer, aim for free chlorine levels at the higher end — 2–3 ppm rather than the minimum 1 ppm — because consumption is faster. With heavy bather loads or after a dust event, a shock treatment (raising chlorine to 10 ppm temporarily) is often necessary to oxidise the organic load and reset the water.
Algae: What’s Actually Happening and How to Stop It
Algae spores are always present in pool water. They don’t cause problems when your sanitiser levels are correct and your water is balanced. They become a problem the moment your free chlorine drops, especially when water temperature rises above 26°C, which is essentially all summer in Cyprus.
Green Algae
The most common type. It spreads fast once it starts — pool walls and floor turn slippery, water turns hazy or green. Green algae responds well to shock treatment followed by thorough brushing (not just vacuuming — brushing breaks up colonies and exposes them to the sanitiser) and then a follow-up algaecide if needed.
Mustard Algae
Yellow-brown and often brushes off easily, only to return. Mustard algae is chlorine-resistant and more common than many pool owners realise. It requires a targeted algaecide alongside a high-dose shock, and everything that’s been in the pool — floats, brushes, toys — needs to be sanitised too, or it reintroduces the algae.
Prevention Is Cheaper Than Treatment
Treating an established algae bloom takes chemicals, time, and often a professional visit. Preventing it costs far less. The key preventive steps in summer:
- Test your water at least twice a week — once a week is not enough in July and August
- Maintain your stabiliser level — check CYA at the start of the season and top up if needed
- Run your pump longer — aim for 10–12 hours per day in peak summer, not 6–8
- Brush your pool walls and floor weekly — even if the water looks clear
- Shock after heavy use or dust storms — don’t wait to see visible signs
Hard Water and Scaling: The Cyprus-Specific Problem
Cyprus tap water typically has calcium hardness levels of 300–500 ppm, sometimes higher. Ideal pool calcium hardness is 200–400 ppm, so many pools are already at the top of the range before evaporation concentrates it further. High calcium combined with high pH and high temperatures causes calcium carbonate to precipitate out — that white scale on your tiles, your waterline, and your equipment.
Scale also creates rough surfaces where algae can anchor. Keeping your pH between 7.2–7.4 (rather than letting it drift to 7.8+) significantly reduces scaling and keeps chlorine more effective. A monthly dose of a quality scale inhibitor during summer is money well spent.
What You Should Do Right Now
If you’re heading into the peak summer months, run a full water test — not just chlorine, but pH, alkalinity, stabiliser, and calcium hardness. Adjust accordingly before the heat peaks, not after you’ve already got a problem.
