Cyprus has some of the hardest tap water in Europe. Depending on where you are on the island, total dissolved solids can run extremely high, and calcium hardness levels in fill water commonly sit between 300 and 500 ppm, sometimes higher in areas drawing from limestone aquifers. For pool owners, that chemistry creates a specific and persistent problem: scale. White crusty deposits on tiles, cloudy water, rough surfaces on the pool floor, and clogged filtration equipment are not signs of poor maintenance — they are the predictable result of Cypriot water chemistry interacting with heat, evaporation, and UV exposure. Understanding what drives the problem is the first step to managing it effectively.
Why Cyprus Water Causes Scale Faster Than Almost Anywhere Else
The island’s geology is the starting point. Much of Cyprus sits on limestone and chalk formations, and groundwater picks up calcium carbonate as it moves through the rock. By the time that water reaches your tap or borehole and goes into your pool, it is already carrying a heavy mineral load.
The climate makes things significantly worse. In a hot Cypriot summer, an uncovered pool can lose 5 to 7 centimetres of water per week to evaporation. Every time water evaporates, the dissolved minerals stay behind. You top up, more minerals come in, more water evaporates, and the cycle concentrates calcium and carbonates relentlessly. UV radiation also breaks down the carbonate balance by driving off carbon dioxide, which pushes pH upward, and high pH is exactly the condition under which calcium carbonate drops out of solution and onto your tile line.
Sand and dust storms from North Africa, which arrive in Cyprus several times a year, also deposit fine alkaline particles into pool water. These events spike turbidity and can temporarily shift both pH and total alkalinity, adding another variable that accelerates scaling if the water is not rebalanced promptly afterwards.
How to Read the Warning Signs
Scale rarely appears all at once. It builds gradually, and most owners notice it first as a white or greyish band along the waterline tile — this is sometimes called tile line scale or scum line scale, though what you’re seeing is primarily calcium carbonate, not organic scum. Run your finger along the tile just above or below the water surface. If it feels rough or gritty rather than smooth, scaling has already started.
Other signs to look for:
- A rough, sandpaper-like texture on plaster or fibreglass pool surfaces
- White or grey deposits around return jets and skimmer baskets
- Reduced flow from return jets without an obvious blockage
- Cloudy water that does not clear after normal shocking and filtration
- Calcium deposits visible on pool equipment inside the plant room
In severe cases, scale can partially block heat exchanger tubes in pool heaters, significantly reducing their efficiency and shortening their lifespan. This is an expensive repair that is almost always avoidable.
Preventing Scale: The Chemistry You Need to Control
Calcium Hardness
Ideal calcium hardness for a pool is 200 to 400 ppm. In Cyprus, your fill water may already be at or above the top of that range before you add a single chemical. There is no practical way to remove calcium from pool water on a large scale without specialised equipment, so the goal is to stop it from precipitating out of solution and forming deposits. That means controlling the other variables — primarily pH, total alkalinity, and temperature.
pH and Total Alkalinity
Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6. At pH 7.8 or above, calcium carbonate becomes increasingly insoluble and begins to plate out onto surfaces. Total alkalinity should sit between 80 and 120 ppm. High alkalinity buffers the pH too far upward and also contributes directly to scale formation. In Cyprus, it is very common to find pools with total alkalinity running at 180 to 200 ppm or more, which is genuinely problematic.
Use muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) to bring both values down when needed. Dilute it, add it to the deep end with the pump running, and re-test after a full circulation cycle. Do not add large doses at once.
Sequestering Agents
A sequestering agent — sometimes called a scale and stain inhibitor — works by binding to calcium and other minerals in solution and keeping them suspended rather than letting them attach to surfaces. In Cypriot conditions, a monthly dose of a quality phosphonate-based sequestrant is a sensible part of routine maintenance. It is not a substitute for correct chemistry, but it provides a useful buffer when calcium hardness is elevated.
Removing Scale That Has Already Formed
Tile line deposits can be removed with a pumice stone on ceramic or porcelain tiles — work gently and keep the stone wet. For fibreglass or painted surfaces, an acid wash or a diluted muriatic acid solution applied carefully will dissolve calcium deposits. For significant buildup on plaster surfaces or around fittings, a professional acid wash is usually the most effective approach.
Equipment scale requires descaling treatments, either chemical or physical depending on the component. Heat exchangers with significant buildup may need specialist attention.
Partial water replacement is sometimes the most practical option when calcium hardness is very high — typically above 600 ppm — and other chemistry adjustments are not holding. Draining 30 to 40 percent of the pool and refilling with fresh water dilutes the mineral load and gives you a more manageable starting point. This is worth doing in late autumn before the quieter winter months.
Staying on Top of It Year-Round
Scale control is not a once-a-year job in Cyprus. Water chemistry should be tested at least once a week during summer, and every two to three weeks during winter. Keep a log of your readings — patterns tell you a great deal about how your specific pool behaves with local water.
If you have a holiday rental, pay particular attention after changeovers and after any extended period when the pool has been unattended. Water chemistry drifts quickly in the heat, and the cost of regular testing is trivial compared to the cost of a tile regrout or a heat exchanger replacement.
