How to Beat Hard Water and Calcium Scale in Your Pool


Cyprus has among the hardest tap water in Europe. If you own a pool here, you have almost certainly seen the results: white crusty deposits around the waterline, a rough chalky feel on the steps and walls, cloudy water that won’t clear no matter how much chlorine you add. This is not a maintenance failure. It is a predictable consequence of filling and topping up your pool with water drawn from limestone-rich aquifers. Understanding what is actually happening, and what to do about it, will save you money, protect your pool surfaces, and keep the water looking right.

Why Cyprus Water Is So Hard

The geology of the island is largely limestone and chalk. As rainwater filters through the ground, it dissolves calcium and magnesium carbonates, which end up in the groundwater supply. By the time that water reaches your pool, it is carrying high levels of dissolved minerals — typically calcium hardness readings of 300–500 ppm or more straight from the tap, sometimes higher in areas like Limassol and Larnaca.

Add to that the intense evaporation Cyprus summers bring. When water evaporates from your pool, it takes nothing with it: not the calcium, not the magnesium. Those minerals stay in the water and concentrate. Over a long hot summer with heavy evaporation, you can watch your calcium hardness climb well above 600 or even 800 ppm. At those levels, the water becomes saturated and starts depositing calcium carbonate onto every surface it touches.

What Calcium Scale Actually Does to Your Pool

Scale is not just cosmetic. Left unaddressed, it causes real damage.

Surface Damage

On plaster and rendered pools, scale bonds tightly to the surface and becomes increasingly difficult to remove. What starts as a thin white film becomes hard nodular deposits that can only be removed by acid washing or, in bad cases, replastering. On tiled pools, scale settles into grout lines and along the waterline tiles, eventually causing discolouration and cracking if water gets under deposits and expands.

Equipment Problems

Calcium scale forms inside pipes, on heat exchanger surfaces, and on salt chlorinator cells. On a salt cell, scale reduces efficiency significantly. The cell has to work harder, runs hotter, and wears out faster. We regularly see cells that should last five or six years failing in two or three because of scale buildup that was never properly managed.

Water Clarity

High calcium levels, especially combined with high pH, push water into a supersaturated state. The water clouds up, sometimes severely, and does not respond normally to chemical treatment. This is often misdiagnosed as an algae problem or a filtration issue when the actual cause is calcium precipitation.

How to Keep Calcium Under Control

Know Your Numbers

Test your calcium hardness regularly — every two weeks in summer is not excessive. The target range is 200–400 ppm. Anything above 400 ppm puts you at increasing risk of scale; above 500 ppm and you need to act. A proper test kit or a visit from a professional gives you the full picture alongside pH, alkalinity, and your Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), which tells you whether your water is actively scaling, balanced, or corrosive.

Choose Your Sanitiser Carefully

This is a point many pool owners miss. Calcium hypochlorite (cal hypo), one of the most widely sold pool chlorine products in Cyprus, adds calcium to your water every time you dose it. In a region where high calcium is already the core problem, using cal hypo as your main sanitiser quietly makes things worse with every application. If your calcium hardness is elevated, switch to sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine) or invest in a salt chlorinator. Neither adds calcium to the water. The upfront cost of changing approach is almost always lower than the cost of managing the scale damage caused by compounding calcium over a season.

Use a Sequestering Agent

A sequestrant, sometimes called a scale inhibitor, binds to calcium and magnesium ions in the water and keeps them in solution rather than allowing them to deposit on surfaces. This is one of the most useful products in a Cyprus pool owner’s toolkit. Dose it monthly as a preventative, or more frequently if your hardness is already high. It will not lower your calcium hardness reading; it just stops the calcium from causing damage. In practice, consistent sequestrant use combined with careful pH control allows many pools to run at calcium levels that would otherwise cause constant scale, without needing frequent partial drains.

Partial Drain and Refill

When calcium hardness climbs persistently above 500–600 ppm, dilution becomes necessary. Removing 20–30% of the pool volume and replacing it with fresh water is the most direct reset available. Do this in cooler months when evaporation is slower and the chemistry stays stable longer.

Two practical considerations specific to Cyprus are worth noting here. First, water is genuinely expensive on the island, and during dry years or peak summer, supplies can be restricted. Refilling a large pool is not a trivial cost, and treating dilution as a casual fix misses the point: the goal is to manage chemistry well enough to stretch the interval between refills as long as possible. Sequestrant use and pH discipline are your tools for doing that. Second, draining the pool carries structural risk. For fibreglass or concrete shells on a high water table, significant water removal can allow hydrostatic pressure to lift the shell. Do not drain more than necessary, and in areas with high groundwater, consult a professional before attempting a partial drain.

Maintain pH Carefully

High pH dramatically accelerates scale formation. Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6. If you are using trichlor tablets, the naturally acidic character of the product may keep pH in range on its own. If you are using sodium hypochlorite or a salt system, you will likely need to add pH reducer regularly. Consistent monitoring pays off more here than any single chemical treatment.

Acid Washing Existing Scale

If scale has already built up on your pool walls, steps, or waterline tiles, mechanical scrubbing combined with diluted muriatic acid can remove it. This requires care: acid splashes on skin or eyes are serious, and adding acid incorrectly to pool water can cause rapid pH swings that damage surfaces further. Dust Storms and Minerals From the Air

Cyprus’s periodic Saharan dust storms add mineral load directly to your pool. After a heavy dust event, your pool water chemistry can shift noticeably. Run your filter longer after these events and check your water balance, particularly pH and alkalinity, before assuming your normal routine is enough.
