If you’re building a new pool in Cyprus or thinking about converting your existing one, the saltwater versus chlorine question comes up almost immediately. Both systems work. Both have real trade-offs. And the specific conditions here — intense UV, hard limestone-heavy water, long swimming seasons, and frequent Saharan dust — affect how each system performs in ways that aren’t always obvious from generic online advice.
How Each System Actually Works
A traditional chlorine pool uses dosing: you add chlorine directly, either as liquid, granules, or tablets, and you manage levels manually or with a dosing pump. You control the chemistry yourself, or your pool technician does.
A saltwater pool is not chlorine-free. That needs saying clearly. A saltwater system uses a salt chlorine generator (SCG), sometimes called an electrolytic chlorinator, to convert dissolved salt into chlorine through electrolysis. The pool still contains chlorine. The difference is that it’s produced continuously on-site rather than added externally. Salt levels in a saltwater pool typically run around 3,000–4,000 ppm, which is far below seawater (roughly 35,000 ppm) and only mildly salty to the skin.
The Cyprus-Specific Challenges
Hard Water and Calcium Scaling
Cyprus has some of the hardest tap water in Europe. Calcium hardness regularly exceeds 400–500 ppm in Limassol and Paphos, which creates problems for both systems but hits saltwater pools differently. High calcium accelerates scaling on the electrolytic cell — the titanium plates inside the SCG where chlorine production happens. Without regular descaling, cell efficiency drops and the unit can fail prematurely. Most SCG cells have a lifespan of three to five years under normal conditions. In Cyprus, without proper water chemistry management, you may find yourself at the shorter end of that range.
Stabiliser levels (cyanuric acid) also matter more here. The UV index in Cyprus is consistently high from April through October. Without adequate CYA, chlorine degrades rapidly under direct sunlight regardless of which system you’re using.
Dust, Pollen and Saharan Deposits
Dust storms from North Africa deposit fine particles and organic matter into pools across the island, often overnight. This creates an immediate chlorine demand spike. In a manually dosed chlorine pool, you can respond by shocking the pool quickly. In a saltwater pool, the SCG can ramp up output, but there’s a ceiling on how fast it responds. Serious contamination events — a heavy calima deposit, a pool full of pollen — often still require a manual chlorine shock even in a saltwater pool.
Maintenance Differences in Practice
Day-to-Day Management
A saltwater pool does require less hands-on chemical dosing week to week. pH management is arguably the more demanding task, since the electrolysis process tends to push pH upward over time, requiring regular acid additions to keep levels in the 7.2–7.6 range. This is not optional chemistry — high pH reduces chlorine effectiveness and promotes scaling on the cell and pool surfaces.
A traditionally chlorinated pool gives you more direct control and faster response, which some pool owners and most professional technicians prefer during the long high-season months.
Equipment and Running Costs
The SCG unit itself costs between €600 and €1,500 installed, depending on pool size and brand. Replacement cells are typically €200–€500. Salt is inexpensive and you only top up what’s lost to splashing and backwashing. Over several years, chemical costs are generally lower with a saltwater system.
That said, saltwater is corrosive over time. Pool equipment, handrails, ladders, lighting fixtures and surrounding stonework can suffer if the system isn’t correctly balanced. This is worth factoring into the total cost, particularly for pools with natural stone surrounds or older metalwork — both common in Cyprus villas.
Seasonal Considerations
Cyprus pools don’t close for winter the way pools in northern Europe do. Most residential and rental pools run year-round, or at least eight to ten months. This longer operating season is actually an advantage for saltwater systems: the SCG works best at consistent run times, and you’re not dealing with the restart issues that come with extended winterisation.
During summer, when water temperatures push above 28–30°C, saltwater pools can experience increased pH instability and faster chlorine burn-off. Both systems need more active management in peak summer. Neither runs itself.
Which One Is Right for You
For a busy holiday rental or villa with high bather loads and irregular maintenance schedules, a saltwater system can help smooth out chlorine fluctuations — but it does not replace professional maintenance. The cell needs quarterly inspection at minimum, the water chemistry still needs regular testing, and you’ll likely need a manual shock protocol for dust events.
For a homeowner who wants full control and straightforward equipment, or who has an older pool not optimised for saltwater, a traditional chlorine system is cheaper to install and easier to troubleshoot.
The honest answer is that the system matters less than the consistency of maintenance. A poorly managed saltwater pool will have worse water quality than a well-managed chlorine pool, and vice versa.
