The Water Has Gone Green, Cloudy, or Both
Green water means algae. Cloudy water usually means a chemical imbalance, a filtration problem, or both. Neither is unusual in Cyprus, where summer temperatures above 35°C and intense UV radiation accelerate algae growth and drive chlorine out of solution faster than it does in cooler climates.
Why DIY treatment often falls short
When water is visibly green, most owners add a large dose of chlorine and run the pump overnight. Sometimes that works. Often it doesn’t, because the underlying cause — low cyanuric acid levels, a poorly calibrated salt chlorinator, a biofilm layer coating the pipe walls — remains untouched. A professional will test for the full range of parameters: free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid, calcium hardness, and phosphate levels. Treating the symptom without understanding the chemistry usually means the problem returns within a week or two.

The island’s dust storms, which arrive most frequently in spring and early summer carrying fine Saharan particles, can overwhelm a sand or cartridge filter in a matter of days. That fine particulate doesn’t always trigger a high pressure reading on the gauge; it can blind a filter without the usual warning signs. If you have backwashed the sand filter, cleaned the cartridge, and the water remains dull or hazy, the filter media itself may need replacing — or the pressure gauge may have failed and been masking the problem for months.

Left unchecked, scale inside a heat exchanger can reduce efficiency significantly and eventually cause the unit to fail.
